Marchais, Georges
(1920-1995)
   political figure
Born in La Hoguette, Calvados, Georges Marchais became a member of the French communist party (PCF) in 1947 and quickly rose through its ranks. He joined its Central Committee in 1956, its Political Bureau in 1959, was named deputy secretary-general in 1970, then became secretary-general in 1972, replacing pierre waldeck-rochet, who had resigned because of illness. Marchais helped to develop a common program for the Left with the socialist Party in 1973. A deputy since that date, he stood as a candidate in the presidential election of 1981 and had to deal with the subsequent electoral decline of the PCF and the development of a struggle at the party's center. A leader of the PCF through the postwar period, Marchais, at the 21st Party Congress (January 1994), ceded leadership of the party to robert hue.
